Northern Peru, an area not often explored by visitors, yet it is a region that holds hidden gems for adventurous trip and promises to be the next big tourist destination in Peru. Many people are unaware that in Peru many civilizations pre-dated the Inca and northern Peru was once the center of several mighty civilizations. Above the mountain town of Cajamarca where Pizarro first encountered and captured the Inca Emperor Atahualpa, beginning the Spanish conquest of Peru, winding roads travel are the doorway of an adventure into a world of lost civilizations and ancient ruins. Within Andes mountains and still unezpolred highland forests lie the archaeological ruins dating of the least known, yet one of the most advanced Pre-Columbian cultures of South America. The Cloud People, as the Chachapoyas were nicknamed, leaved burial places like the impressive cliff burial site of Carajía but the most famous and most worthwhile of all the Chachapoyan archeological remains is Kuelap, a huge citadel complex perched majestically atop mountain-top cliffs overlooking the Andean landscape.
